80 Blankets: Piles of Pineapples

The yarn combination on this one might seem a little surprising. I took a 100% polyester chenille-esq yarn and paired it with an 90/10 acrylic/mohair blend. Weird? Maybe, but it works! The combination is a soft yet substantial fabric. Even though the stitch I’m using is very open I think the resulting blanket will still be warm to snuggle up with.

I did go into this blanket thinking I could finish with 3 balls of the Feels Like Butta and 2 of the Touch of Mohair. I was basing this off past #80Blankets and didn’t remember to consider how much yarn these pineapple stitches consume. Because of the yardage used I likely won’t be repeating this for another of my 80 wedding blankets, but I would consider making it again for other purposes. (Or using pineapples with other stitches to use less yarn. You’ll see I started that idea if you scroll down to the stitch tutorial below.)

Pattern Info

Yarn: 4 balls Lion Brand Feels Like Butta “Dusty Blue”, 3 balls Lion Brand Touch of Mohair “Light Taupe”
Hook: 10mm crochet hook
Gauge: 7 sts = 4″ in pattern (1.75 sts per inch)
Finished Size: 40″ x 45″

I did not count the 2 chains at the beginning of each row as a stitch. Instead I worked these turning chains and then worked the first stitch (double crochet) at the base/1st stitch of the row. This creates a more solid edge.

Holding 1 strand of each yarn together, chain (ch) 74

Foundation Row: double crochet (dc) in the 3rd chain from hook, dc in every ch to end, turn – 72 dc sts (not counting the turning ch)

Row 1: ch 2, dc in the 1st st (same as base of ch), *ch 1, skip next st, pineapple st; rep from * to last st, end dc in last st, turn

Continue working this row until blanket measures about 45″ or one row less than desired length.

Last Row: ch 2, dc in each st to end of row.

Finishing (optional)

Cut 10″ lengths of yarn to use as tassels for corners. I used about 20 strands per corner, folded them over and used a crochet hook to make fringe style tassels in each corner.

Stitches in box indicate repeat. Since I am not counting the beginning turning chain as the first stitch I have included the chains as extra stitches at the beginning of each row.

How To Work A Pineapple Stitch

Note that in the Row 1 of the blanket pattern above you will work the pineapple stitch through the top of a double crochet and NOT through a chain space as directed below.

Step 1: yarn over & insert hook through chain space, yarn over & pull through a loop
Step 2: [yarn over & insert hook through chain space, yarn over & pull through a loop] twice more
Step 3: yarn over & pull through 6 loops on hook
Step 4: yarn over & pull through remaining 2 loops
